The Wines of Sylvie Augereau

Sylvie Augereau is a prolific wine writer and passionate spokesperson for natural wine. She is also founder of celebrated natural wine festival La Dive Bouteille, which is held annually in the Loire Valley.

In her own words: A natural wine is simply [made from] grapes fermented with the yeasts from their terroir.  That signifies that you do not add anything to hinder their expression. Yes, this approach can become a philosophy.  In any case, it’s a commitment, a revolutionary act, since it’s a big risk: you can lose a whole year’s work.

Sylvie owns a small 1.5ha vineyard at Le Thoureil (equidistant between Saumur and Angers), which is co-planted with Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Grolleau and Pineau d’Aunis.

And (we think) her natural wines are simply stunning!

Sylvie Augereau VDF Peaux Chenin Blanc 2016

100% Chenin Blanc from 100-year-old vines, grown on clay-limestone soils.  Natural ferment - on the skins - and maturation in Georgian qvevri.  No fining/filtration.  Minimal sulphur at bottling.

A shimmering, golden colour.  The nose offers beautiful aromatic complexity, combining white flowers, candied lemon and apricot, with hints of dried honey. The palate delivers a generous load of spicy, tannic grip with impressive tension and fantastically deep mineral tones.

Sylvie Augereau VDF Réjouissances Rouge 2016

Blend of 50% Pineau d'Aunis and 50% Grolleau from 50-year-old vines, grown on clay-limestone soils.  Destemmed. Natural co-fermented in fibreglass tank.  Maturation for 12 months in used oak barrels.  No fining/filtration.  Minimal sulphur at bottling.

Offers rich aromas of red and black fruits, sour cherries and spice.  Light-bodied on the palate, but punches above its weight with intense fresh raspberries, earthy characters, savoury black olive tapenade flavours and lively acidity.
