Grape Variety: Fumin
Colour: Red
Fumin is one of the main red varieties in the Aosta Valley region of northern Italy. It is used both as a varietal and in blends. Fumin is dark and juicy with soft tannins. The varietal Fumin from Cantina di Barro (Elvira Stefania Rini, Villeneuve) is a positively meaty wine with a dark colour, somewhat akin to Syrah in style. This native vine used to be typical of the Envers wine zone, and derives its name from the smoky notes that characterises its wine (fumo = smoke). Intense ruby red, with a characteristic spicy scent, it is austere in the mouth, showing good acidity and rich body. The organoleptic qualities of the Fumin improve decidedly with ageing and refinement in the bottle. Fumin is also one of the indigenous grape varieties used in the blend for the D.O.C. Torrette (see the Torrette Superiore from Cantina di Barro); this example contains 90% Petit Rouge with some Mayolet, Vien de Nus, Cornalin and Fumin.
