Grape Variety: Fogliatonda
Colour: Red
A Tuscan varietal, its name means “round leaf”. Late-maturing and high-yielding, wines made from this grape tend to have a deep ruby colour and a robust texture (good for conservation). Used in some vineyards in Chianti blends - see the wine from Giovanna Morganti in her deliciously organic Chianti Classico Le Trame, Giovanna strongly believes in the potential and quality of indigenous Tuscan grape varieties. Her Chianti is a blend of Fogliatonda, Ciliegolo, Colorino, Mammolo and Prugnolo Gentile (the local Tuscan name for Sangiovese) and you would sup it from a decanter with some fine peppered beefsteak with rocket and a dribble of extra virgin oil. Dribble, dribble.
