Grape Variety: Ciliegiolo

Colour: Red

A native Tuscan grape said to have been imported from Spain (from the sanctuary of Saint James of Compostela) by pilgrims - hence its other Italian alias - Ciliegona Rossa Tonda di Spagna - the red and round Ciliegona from Spain. It has a strong fragrance and when well-made has an unmistakeably Mediterranean warm sweet fruit style and thrives best in warm climates, which means that it is very successful in Maremma in Tuscany. Antonio Camillo’s Maremma Rosso IGT Principio is made from 100% 40-yr old Ciliegolo vines, fermented with indigenous yeasts, an appealing wine that burbles juicily with cherry, raspberry and blueberry seasoned by caraway and dried thyme. In the mouth it is fresh, youthful and mineral with a pleasing tannic structure - a perfect summer red.
