Grape Variety: Caladoc

Colour: Red

A grape created by ampelographer Paul Truel by crossing Grenache with Malbec.  Its name, the French wine grape expert Pierre Galet tells us was created by using but slightly changing the beginning of the word Galabert - the lake in the Bouches uu Rhone near where this grape variety was first catalogued by the Ministry of Agriculture, and the the end of the word Languedoc.  It was created by Truel in order to produce a grape resistant to coulure, a quality which meant that it became popular amongst farmers in the Rhone valley- It has been called by some ‘Le Grenache qui ne coule pas.

It is found to a limited extent only in the Southern Rhone and it is not allowed in any AOC, but can be used to add tannin and aroma to red vin de pays in Provence.  It produces robust well-coloured, tannic red wines, and elegant, well-balanced rosé wines.

It appears (100%) in our Volubilia Gris from Domaine de la Zouina in Morocco. The wine is both delicate and has substance, a chip off the old Provencale.
