Grape Variety: Arneis
Colour:
White
An ancient variety grown near Alba in Piemonte recently saved from extinction by a few notable Barolo producers such Bruno Giacoso, Arneis is sometimes referred to as Barolo Bianco although never labelled as such. Difficult to grow because of its delicate skin, “Arneis” in the regional dialect means “whimsical.” It is often used as a blender to soften tannins in the red wines of the area, much as the French use Viognier in the Northern Rhone. The Roero Arneis Desire from Cascina Pellerino has terrific individuality. The nose reveals subtle perfumes of chamomile, apples, pears, fennel and almonds. This is a very refreshing white recommended with a wide variety of foods, especially antipasti and pasta dishes.
