Grape Variety: Aramon
Colour:
Red
Used and abused in the Midi for decades, the workhorse Aramon which can yield as much as 350 hl/ha, is finally being uprooted in favour of more noble varieties. Pierre Cros in Minervois makes a wine called ‘Les Mal-Aimes”, as in ‘unloved’, an ironic reference to those ancient varieties spurned by most modern winemakers (grapes such as Aramon, Alicante, Picpoul Noir and Carignan). This wine is a wonderfully lithe, berry-laden characterful red, the result of organic methods in the vineyard, low yields and impeccable wine-making. Even ugly ducklings can make the occasional swan.
